Affiliate – the publisher/salesperson in an affiliate marketing relationship.

Average Position – A metric in Google Adwords that helps advertisers understand where, on average, their ads are showing in Google search results pages.

Autoresponder – a program that sends an automatic form response to incoming emails.

Black Hat SEO – refers to an unethical digital marketer or SEO marketing methods used to rank a website higher in the search engine results page.

Backlink – A backlink is a link created when one website links to another.  Backlinks are also called “inbound links” or “incoming links.” Backlinks are important to SEO.

Blog –  is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries (posts). 

B2B Digital MarketingB2B (business-to-business) marketing refers to any marketing strategy or content that is geared towards a business or organization, Any company that sells products or services to other businesses or organizations.

B2C – business that sells products or provides services to the end-user consumers.

Bing Webmaster Tools – (previously the Bing Webmaster Center) is a free service as part of Microsoft’s Bing search engine which allows webmasters to add their websites to the Bing index crawler, see their site’s performance in Bing (clicks, impressions) and a lot more.

Bounce Rate – The percentage of visitors to a website that leave immediately without clicking or interacting with any portion of the page.

Bot – An automated program that visits websites, sometimes also referred to as a “crawler” or a “spider”.

Call To Action (CTA) – Call to action refers to a digital marketing term. CTA is a design that marketers use to prompt a response from consumers.

Contact Form – A section on a website with fillable fields that visitors use to contact the website owner. 

Conversion – The completion of a predefined goal. This is often used to track the number of site visitors that have been “converted” into paying customers, though sales are not always chosen as the metric.

CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) – A metric in paid advertising platforms that measures how much money is spent in order to acquire a new lead or customer.

Crawler – refers to an internet bot (automated piece of software) that scans websites.

Cookie – A delicious baked… A small item of data sent from a website, that is stored on the user’s device. 

CDN (content delivery system) – a system of geographically distributed servers designed to accelerate the delivery of web pages and files by routing user requests to the server that’s in the best position to serve them.

CPM – Stands for “Cost Per Thousand” (M is the roman numeral for 1,000).

Domain Name – location of an entity on the Internet.

Display Ads – Ads on a display network which include many different formats.

DNS – is the phonebook of the Internet. Humans access information online through domain names, like nytimes.com or espn.com. Web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

Digital Marketing Channels – Digital marketing channels refers to digital advertising sources like search engines, websites, mobile apps, email, social media, etc.

Dofollow – A phrase that denotes a hyperlink absent of a “nofollow” tag. 

Dedicated Hosting – hosting option whereby the host provides and is responsible for the equipment, dedicating an entire server to the client’s websites.

Digital Marketing Automation – Digital marketing automation refers to existing software designed to automate marketing actions.

E-Commerce – Electronic commerce or e-commerce (sometimes written as eCommerce) is a business model that lets firms and individuals buy and sell things over the internet.

Email Automation – Email automation refers to a marketing system that uses software to send emails automatically.

Email Lists – A collection of email addresses that can be used to send targeted email marketing campaigns.

F.

Facebook Ads – are targeted to users based on their location, demographic, and profile information. Many of these options are only available on Facebook.

Facebook Business Page – A public webpage on Facebook created to represent a company.

Feature Snippets –  are short snippets of text that appear at the top of Google’s search results in order to quickly answer a searcher’s query. The content that appears inside of a Featured Snippet is automatically pulled from web pages in Google’s index.

Favicon – a small icon that is used by some browsers to identify a bookmarked Web site.

G.

Google – Google, LLC is an American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products, which include online advertising technologies, a search engine, cloud computing, software, and hardware.

Google Adwords – Google Ads is an online advertising platform developed by Google, where advertisers bid to display brief advertisements, service offerings, product listings, or videos to web users. It can place ads both in the results of search engines like Google Search and on non-search websites, mobile apps, and videos.

Google Search Console – Google Search Console is a web service by Google which allows webmasters to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites.

Google My Business – The platform on which businesses can input information to appear in the search results, map packs, location searches, and more.

Google Tag Manager – is a tag management system (TMS) that allows you to quickly and easily update measurement codes and related code fragments collectively known as tags on your website or mobile app.

Geo-Targeting – a method of detecting a website visitor’s location to serve location-based content or advertisements.

Guest Blogging – writing a blog post to be published on another blog as a temporary featured author.

H.

Hashtag – refers to the symbol “#” that is used in social media. Hashtags are used for social media users to find content easily.

Header – Can refer to either the top portion of a webpage that typically contains the logo and menu, or the section of HTML in a website’s code that contains important information about the site.

HTML – refers to the abbreviation for hypertext markup language.

HTTPS – Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (https) is a combination of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) with the Secure Socket Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol.

HTTP – hypertext transfer protocol, the standard protocol for transferring hypertext documents on the World Wide Web.

Hyperlink – In computing, a hyperlink, or simply a link, is a reference to data that the user can follow by clicking or tapping.

Heatmap – a graphical representation of data where varying degrees of a single metric are shown using colors.

I.

Inbound Marketing – a marketing model whose sales performance relies on the initiative of its client base to find and purchase a product.

IP Address – stands for internet protocol address; it is an identifying number that is associated with a specific computer or computer network.

Index – When used as a noun, index refers to all of the web pages that Google has crawled and stored to be shown to Google searchers.

Instagram – is a free, online photo-sharing application and social network platform that was acquired by Facebook in 2012. Instagram allows users to edit and upload photos and short videos through a mobile app.

Impression – A term used in Pay per click advertising that represents how many times an ad was shown.

J.

Java – Java is a programming language that is used to create applications that can run on a digital device.

Javascript  – often abbreviated as JS, is a programming language that conforms to the ECMAScript specification. JavaScript is high-level, often just-in-time compiled, and multi-paradigm.

K.

Keyword – A word or phrase indicative of the major theme in a piece of content.

Keyword Density – Keyword density refers to the percentage of how often a keyword appears on a webpage in relation to the total words on that webpage.

keyword Marketing – putting your message in front of people who are searching using particular keywords and keyphrases.

Long Tail Keyword: A keyword phrase that is longer in length and hyper-specifically matches a user search query.

L.

Landing Page – In online marketing, a landing page, sometimes known as a “lead capture page”, “static page”, or a “destination page”, is a single web page that appears in response to clicking on a search engine optimized search result, marketing promotion, marketing email, or an online advertisement.

Link – Also known as a hyperlink, a link is a string of hypertext transfer protocol structured text used to connect web pages on the internet.

Linkedin – LinkedIn is an American business and employment-oriented online service that operates via websites and mobile apps.

Lead – In a sales context, a lead refers to contact with a potential customer, also known as a “prospect”.  For some companies, a “lead” is a contact already determined to be a prospective customer.

Link Checker – tool used to check for broken hyperlinks.

M.

Marketing –  refers to activities a company undertakes to promote the buying or selling of a product or service.

Meta Description: One of the meta tags that gives a description of the page in 160 characters. 

META Tags – tags to describe various aspects about a Web page.

Mobile Page Optimization – refers to mobile SEO best practices to ensure a website is designed to account for various screen sizes and load times.

Marketing Automation – Marketing automation refers to software platforms and technologies designed for marketing departments and organizations to more effectively market on multiple channels online and automate repetitive tasks.

N.

Native Advertising – Native advertising is a popular type of social media advertising where an ad follows the form, function, and feel of the content of the media where it’s placed.

Niche – A very specific segment of a market in which you are trying to meet the needs of that market.

Nofollow – is a value that can be assigned to the rel attribute of an HTML a element to instruct some search engines that the hyperlink should not influence the ranking of the link’s target in the search engine’s index.

Navigation – that which facilitates movement from one Web page to another Web page.

O.

Organic – the unpaid entries in a search engine results page that were derived based on their contents’ relevance to the keyword query.

Onboarding – This term can refer to introducing a new customer or client to your services or products, or it’s used to describe assimilating a new employee into your organization.

Outbound Marketing – refers to any kind of marketing where a company initiates the conversation and sends its message out to an audience.

Opt-In Email – is a term used when someone is not initially added to an emailing list and is instead given the option to join the emailing list.

Opt-Out – (1) type of program that assumes inclusion unless stated otherwise. (2) to remove oneself from an opt-out program.

P.

Page View – request to load a single HTML page.

Pay Per Click (PPC) – is an internet advertising model used to drive traffic to websites, in which an advertiser pays a publisher when the ad is clicked.

PBN – A PBN is a network of websites used to build links (and therefore pass authority) to a single website for the purpose of manipulating search engine rankings.

Portfolio – A series of case studies that provide proof of value to potential customers.

Pop-Up Ad – an ad that displays in a new browser window.

PayPal – an online payment service that lets its users make purchases and receive payments via a user-defined email address.

Q.

Qualified Lead – A sales qualified lead (SQL) is a prospect created by the marketing department and vetted by the sales team.

QR – is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by a cell phone), They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it in to your cell phone.

R.

Return On Investment (ROI) – the ratio of profits (or losses) to the amount invested.

Robots.Txt – is a text file webmasters create to instruct web robots (typically search engine robots) how to crawl pages on their website.

Run Of Site (ROS) – ad buying option in which ad placements may appear on any pages of the target site.

RSS – (RDF Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed that allows users and applications to access updates to websites in a standardized, computer-readable format.

Rankings – A general term for where a website appears in search engine results.

Remarketing – is a way to connect with people who previously interacted with your website or mobile app.

Search Engine Optimization –  Search engine optimization is the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine.

SERP – Search engine results pages, are web pages served to users, when they search for something online, using a search engine, such as Google. 

Sitemap – A site map is a list of pages of a web site, there are three primary kinds of site map: Site maps used during the planning of a Web site by its designers.

Social Media – Social media, is a computer-based technology. that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities.

Title Tag – HTML tag used to define the text in the top line of a Web browser.

Text Ad – advertisement using text-based hyperlinks.
